Video: Wit and Science — The Glass of Reason
This clip initiates the recurring motif of the Glass of Reason. At the beginning of the play,
Reason hands Wit (Intelligence) a glass of reason in which he can see his true self. After several adventures, when Wit has
given up on his quest to win Science (Learning), he is bamboozled by Idleness and dressed up as a fool.
Self-knowledge through the glass brings him to Shame, and Reason reprimands him. John Redford Wit and Science. Performed Lancaster and Groningen, 1993. Filmed at
Hoghton Tower, Lancashire. |
